Dr. Roger Schank, CEO

Professor Roger Schank, CEO of XTOL, is one of the world’s leading visionaries in artificial intelligence, learning theory, cognitive science, and the building of virtual learning environments.

Dr. Schank has had a significant impact on the landscape of all learning, specifically e-learning and simulation design. He has written hundreds of white papers, technical reports, and articles, and dozens of books. Dr. Schank was selected as one of the top ten movers and shakers in eLearning in the world for 2010, 2011 and 2012. Dr. Schank was formerly a professor of Computer Science at Stanford University, Yale University, Northwestern University and Carnegie Mellon University. He was also the founder and Director of the renowned Institute for the Learning Sciences at Northwestern University.

In 1994, he founded Cognitive Arts Corporation, a company that designs and builds high quality multimedia simulations for use in corporate training and for online university-level courses. The latter were built in partnership with Columbia University.

In 2002, Carnegie Mellon University agreed to adopt his curricula at their new Silicon Valley campus, where he served as Chief Educational Officer. That same year Dr. Schank founded, and currently serves as CEO of, Socratic Arts, a company that designs and builds learn-by-doing programs for Fortune 500 companies, the government, and post-secondary schools. Additionally, he established Engines for Education, a non-profit organization dedicated to designing and building new curricula for primary and secondary schools, for which he serves as Executive Director.


Dr. Ray Bareiss, Chief Education Officer

Professor Ray Bareiss is the Chief Education Officer of XTOL and a Senior Vice President of its sister company Socratic Arts. Prior to joining XTOL, Dr. Bareiss was Director of Educational Programs and Professor of the Practice of Software Engineering and Software Management at Carnegie Mellon’s Silicon Valley Campus. At Carnegie Mellon Dr. Bareiss oversaw and taught in two unique, learning-by-doing, professional master’s programs.

He was a founding employee of Cognitive Arts Corporation and served as executive vice president for strategic projects, such as virtual university collaborations and large-scale corporate eLearning initiatives.

Prior to joining Cognitive Arts, Dr. Bareiss was Assistant Director of the Institute for the Learning Sciences at Northwestern University, as well as a Research Associate Professor of Computer Science and Education. Dr. Bareiss specializes in computer-based learning environments, organizational memory and computer-based performance support, new product development, human-computer interaction, and cased-based reasoning. He is also the author of a number of books and articles. Dr. Bareiss holds a Ph.D. in Computer Sciences and a B.S. in Communication from the University of Texas at Austin.
